Correct This Hyaloid Membrane Detachment Claim
Question: I have an op note that states the surgeon started a posterior vitreous detachment and removed the hyaloid membrane off the retina. We originally reported 67041 for the procedure, but it was denied. How can we correct the claim? Washington Subscriber Answer: To correct the claim, you’ll use 67036 (Vitrectomy, mechanical, pars plana approach) in place of 67041 (Vitrectomy, mechanical, pars plana approach; with removal of preretinal cellular membrane (eg, macular pucker)). A standard vitrectomy inherently includes starting a posterior vitreous detachment. This component doesn’t fulfill the requirements of 67041, so you can’t report the code for the surgeon’s work.
