Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Reader Question:

IOL Master

Question: How do we bill for the intraocular lens (IOL) Master?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: For now, you must use the unlisted procedure code, 92499. However, next years CPT will include a code for this procedure. Unlike A-scans, the measurement is not done by ultrasound. The IOL Master is a non-contact optical coherence biometer; there is no need for anesthesia. It gives all measurements needed prior to cataract surgery: length and curvature. The new code will be listed in the 92xxx series. Different states are assigning different unlisted procedure codes, however, and in some geographic areas, ophthalmologists are being asked to use 66999 (unlisted procedure, anterior segment of eye) a surgery code. Always follow any specific instructions from your Medicare carrier even though 92499 would be a more appropriate unlisted procedure code to use.
