Reader Question:

Low Vision Exams

Question: Are there specific CPT codes for low vision exams?

Florida Subscriber

Answer: The two CPT codes for low vision exams are 92354 (fitting of spectacle mounted low vision aid; single element system) and 92355 (fitting of spectacle mounted low vision aid; telescopic or other compound lens system). CPT states that fitting of spectacles is a separate service as well as supply of materials. Therefore, when you fit a patient with a low vision aid, you would use the appropriate CPT code (92354 or 92355), and the supply code 92393 (supply of low-vision aides).

A low-vision aid is a high-powered plus lens or telescope with high magnification to help the patient perform tasks requiring better near vision (e.g., reading). Patients are candidates for low-vision aids when their eyes cannot be corrected to a fully-functional level by use of glasses or contact lenses. CPT doesnt provide codes for the low-vision examination. Medicare considers 92354 and 92355 bundled into the payment for spectacles.
