Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Photodynamic Therapy

Question: Is there a postoperative period for the new photodynamic therapy (PDT) codes, 96570-96571?

Illinois Subscriber

Answer: PDT is carrier-specific, but thus far most carriers say it has a zero-day global, therefore there is no postoperative period. Because the procedure must be done repeatedly on many patients, the question is significant. Clinically, postoperative care has been published as being a telephone call to check on the patient two to four days following the procedure.
