Reader Question:

Prosthesis Implantation

Question: Our physician inserted a retinal prosthesis. How should I code this procedure? Florida Subscriber Answer: For a ganciclovir implant, which helps with ocular flow, you should assign 67027 (Implantation of intravitreal drug delivery system [e.g., ganciclovir implant], includes concomitant removal of vitreous). If additional implants are performed, the removal of the initial implant is not included in the reimbursement for 67027. For the removal, report 67121 (Removal of implanted material, posterior segment; intraocular).
