An article in the November 2005 Optometry Coding & Billing Alert, -Are You Raising a Red Flag? Check Your Billing Frequency Against National Statistics,- contained incorrect information.
The article charted the allowed services and payment amounts from Medicare for the E/M codes 99201-99215 during 2004. However, the statistics listed were from the wrong specialty group.
In 2004, Medicare paid optometrists $34,382,142 for 99213 (1,006,808 allowed services), $25,356,086 for 99214 (501,074 allowed services) and $16,912,916 for 99212 (683,649 allowed services).
For corrected information on all E/M codes, along with a chart showing the frequency of each code as a percentage of all E/M codes reported, send an e-mail to jerrys@eliresearch.com.
