Optometry Coding & Billing Alert

ICD-9 2006 Reminder:

Start Using New Nonproliferative DR Diagnosis Codes Soon

Distinguish among mild, moderate or severe retinopathy beginning Oct. 1

The new year starts early, at least where diagnosis codes are concerned. Oct. 1 is the first date of service to report codes from ICD-9 2006.

What this means: On Oct. 1, you-ll have five new ICD-9 codes in the 362.0 (Diabetic retinopathy) series. You-ll be able to code the severity of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (DR) with these codes:

- 362.03--Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy NOS

- 362.04--Mild nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

- 362.05--Moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

- 362.06--Severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

- 362.07--Diabetic macular edema.
