News Brief:

No Substantive CCI Edits for Orthopedics

The Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) version 7.3, which went into effect Oct. 1, 2001, contains virtually no changes to the musculoskeletal system codes that have the most impact on orthopedics.

The CCI was introduced by HCFA (now CMS) as a method of identifying codes that are bundled together and therefore not normally reported separately. The edits are updated quarterly, and those updates range from minor to significant in how they affect coding and billing.
