Reader Question:

Choose 27193 for Pelvic Avulsion

Question: Which code should I use for fracture care of anterior iliac spine avulsion with no manipulation?
South Carolina Subscriber Answer: An anterior iliac spine avulsion is a type of pelvic ring fracture, so you should choose 27193 (Closed treatment of pelvic ring fracture, dislocation, diastasis or subluxation; without manipulation). Tip: An avulsion fracture occurs when a tendon or ligament attached to a bone pulls away a fragment of that bone. You may see this injury most often in adolescent athletes, such as sprinters or hurdlers. You should link it to 808.41 (Fracture of pelvis; other specified part, closed; ilium).
