Reader Question:

Impairment Rating

Question: What code should I use when the physician does an impairment rating?

Colorado Subscriber
Answer: Because workers compensation regulations are determined at the state government level, this question should be directed to your state workers compensation program administrator. Many states now have Web sites for their workers compensation programs, so you might want to start your search process on the Internet. CPT offers two reporting options for work related or medical disability evaluation services, 99455 (work related or medical disability examination by the treating physician ) and 99456 (work related or medical disability examination by other than the treating physician ...). Check first that these are accepted. Many workers comp carriers have their own internal codes for impairment ratings.
