Reader Question:

Percutaneous Pinning

Question: How do you code a percutaneous pinning of a proximal humeral fracture? I have been able to find the open reduction internal fixation and the closed reduction, but not percutaneous pinning.

Answer: You are probably going to have to use the enlisted code 24999 (unlisted procedure, humerus or elbow). Submit an operative report and give a good explanation of why the procedure was done, since it is not a common practice to do pinning. For comparable pricing, use 24566 (percutaneous skeletal fixation of humeral epicondylar fracture, medial or lateral, with manipulation).
