Reader Question:

Removal of Exostosis

Question: How do I code for removal of exostosis on the hip?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: Use 27299 (unlisted procedure, pelvis or hip joint). Include the operative report and a KISS (keep it short and simple) letter identifying which code might be the most similar to the procedure performed, and compare and contrast the excision to that code, while still submitting 27299.

The March 2001 Orthopedic Coding Alert contains a sample KISS letter, along with guidelines for submitting unlisted procedure codes.
