Reader Question:

Sports Physicals

Question: We are team physicians for a university and occasionally do sports physicals. What CPT and ICD-9 codes should we use?

Florida Subscriber

Answer: For a routine sports physical that is not a problem-oriented visit, use V70.3 (other medical examination for administrative purposes). To code the office visit, use the evaluation and management codes for preventive medicine (99381-99387) based on the patients age and new or established patient status. Because a sports physical seldom constitutes a comprehensive examination, you may want to append the -52 modifier (reduced services) to the preventive medicine code.
