Reader Question:

Tarsal Excision Is Ostectomy

Question: Our surgeon performed an excision of calcaneal navicular, tarsal coalition. Does CPT include a code for this procedure? Denver Subscriber Answer: For this procedure, you should report 28116 (Ostectomy, excision of tarsal coalition). The National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) includes tumor excision (28043-28045), arthrotomy (28050), and synovectomy (28070) in 28116, so you should not report any of these codes separately if your orthopedist performs them in the course of the ostectomy.
