Clarification:

You Can Report Consult if ENT Later Assumes Care

In the April Otolaryngology Coding Alert, the article -Your Consult Documentation Needs Immediate Revision: Here's Why- stated, -If the consulting physician assumes full care of the patient's problem, a consult isn't appropriate even if you meet the requirements.-

The statement should have read, -If, after the initial consultation, the physician assumes full care, you can no longer report a consult. At that point, if there is an agreed- upon transfer of care, then the physician is assuming full care for the patient and it is not a consult for the subsequent care.-
