News Brief:

Look Forward to Some Bundling Wins

CMS has decided to delete a long-standing edit of two audiometry codes. Since 1996, the National Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) has bundled 92555 (Speech audiometry threshold) into 92553 (Pure tone audiometry [threshold]; air and bone). The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery contacted CMS and explained that the two tests are distinct, separate procedures and should be reimbursed accordingly. CMS agreed with AAO-HNS and decided it will delete the edit, effective with CCI version 8.3, scheduled for implementation on Oct. 1, 2002. The change will not be retroactive. For a full report of the 8.3 edits, see the November issue of Otolaryngology Coding Alert.
