Reader Question:

Choose V72.11 for Normal Hearing Test After Failed Exam

Question: A mother brought her middle school son to us because he had failed a school hearing test. When he came to our office, he had normal hearing. What diagnosis code should we include with the test?

Answer: The correct diagnosis is V72.11 (Encounter for hearing exam following failed hearing screening). When you begin reporting ICD-10 codes in October, the same scenario would be reported with Z01.110. The transition will be simple because the new diagnosis will have the same descriptor you’re accustomed to reporting: Encounter for hearing exam following failed hearing screening.
