Reader Question:

Look to 30220 for Septal Button Insertion

Question: Our surgeon inserted a septal button to treat a septal perforation. Which code should I report for the insertion? Can I also collect for the button itself?

Tennessee Subscriber
Answer: You should report 30220 (Insertion, nasal septal prosthesis [button]) for the surgeon's work inserting the button. Medicare will not reimburse you for the button itself, but some other insurers might.

If your payer reimburses the septal button, you should report the HCPCS code D5922 (Nasal septal prosthesis) for the product.
