Otolaryngology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Say No To 92270 For ENG

Question: My physician wants to report 92270 to describe saccadic testing during an electronystamography (ENG) procedure. I'm not quite sure we can do this. What is your advice?Florida SubscriberAnswer: CPT® guidelines are clear on the issue of reporting CPT® code 92270 (Electro-oculography with interpretation and report) to describe saccadic testing during an ENG procedure. It states that providers should only use this code to document a standard test of the electrical potential created in a retina when exposed to light for vitelliform maculopathy.No-no: The otolaryngologist practice should not report 92270 with ENG testing (i.e., 92541-92547, Vestibular Functions Tests, With Recording).
