Reader Question:

Vocal-Cord Operation Requires xxx99 Code

Question: How should I code a laryngoplasty when the otolaryngologist inserts a silicon spacer for vocal-cord paralysis?

Texas Subscriber Answer: Because CPT contains no specific code for laryngoplasty with silicon spacer insertion, you should report unlisted-procedure code 31599 (Unlisted procedure, larynx).

As when you submit any unlisted-procedure code, you should send supporting documentation, such as the operative note. Also, include a cover letter in which you describe the work the otolaryngologist performed during the laryngoplasty with silicon spacer insertion.
