Coding for Suboccipital Bone Plate Resection

Question: My physician completed a resection of the suboccipital extradural plate with removal of a metal plate. She used a suboccipital craniotomy approach. What would be the best code or codes to use?Colorado Subscriber

Answer: You should report CPT® code 62142 (Removal of bone flap or prosthetic plate of skull) for the procedure.

During the procedure, the surgeon removes a previously placed bone flap or prosthetic skull plate.  The provider performs this service as a result of infection, swelling, overlying wound healing problems, or regrowth of a tumor. Several diagnoses could support reporting 62142, including T85.79XA (Infection and inflammatory reaction due to other internal prosthetic devices, implants and grafts, initial encounter) or Z97.4 (Presence of external hearing aid).
