Reader Question:

Get Specifics for Autonomic Agent Shots

Question: Notes indicate that the PM physician performed a single autonomic nerve injection for a patient, but I cannot find the correct code for this service. Can you help?

Answer: You’re going to need some more detail to choose the proper CPT® code — either by querying the provider or finding more information in the encounter notes.

Why? CPT® devotes an entire section to autonomic nerve injections, not just a single code. When you get more information, choose from the following codes for the service:

  • 64505 — Injection, anesthetic agent; sphenopalatine ganglion
  • 64508 — carotid sinus (separate procedure)
  • 64510 — stellate ganglion (cervical sympathetic)
  • 64517 — superior hypogastric plexus
  • 64520 — … lumbar or thoracic (paravertebral sympathetic)
  • 64530 — celiac plexus, with or without radiologic monitoring.
