Iowa Nurse Heads to Federal Prison

An Iowa-based nurse will be heading to federal prison and has to pay back almost $725,000 based on sentencing on Sept. 15 in court. She faced charges of health care fraud and money laundering based on her actions when she served as the CEO of a counseling center.

The nurse pled guilty to telling employees of the counseling facility to bill Medicaid and three private payers “over 6,000 times using the names and NPIs of various doctors who did not perform the services for which the bills were submitted,” according to a Sept. 19 Department of Justice news release. She ultimately submitted over $1 million in false bills and collected over $700,000 on those claims.
