Part B Insider (Multispecialty) Coding Alert

Physician Notes:

CMS Pushes MIPS Targeted Review Deadline Until November

If your Part B practice is still reviewing your updated Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) numbers for the 2020 performance year (PY), you’ve now got some extra time after the feds uncovered a targeted review policy concern.

Reminder: Once the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) debuts MIPS performance data and feedback, it triggers the targeted review period, which offers clinicians, groups, virtual groups, and specific Alternative Payment Models (APMs) the opportunity to dispute errors and request a targeted review.

Now: CMS recently updated PY 2020 MIPS adjusted payment statistics and performance feedback after receiving a plethora of targeted review concerns from providers. CMS uncovered two issues in their original policies that caused data problems and opted to rework “MIPS scoring logic which resulted in changes to performance feedback, including 2020 final scores and 2022 MIPS payment adjustments,” a Quality Payment Program (QPP) alert noted.

CMS updated the QPP website with the new performance feedback on the 2020 final scores and made 2022 MIPS payment adjustment revisions on Sept. 27. Providers are encouraged to sign into their accounts, peruse the modified data, and request a targeted review if they think an error still exists, CMS advised.

“To offer additional time for clinicians, groups, virtual groups and APM entities and their participants to access and review their performance feedback, we’re extending the targeted review deadline to November 29, 2021 at 8:00pm (ET),” CMS said. “You can submit a targeted review by signing into the Quality Payment Program website.”
