Pathology/Lab Coding Alert

CPT Lists Hemogram Component Codes

Although Medicare introduced two new codes for CBC without platelets, with or without the differential, you may not be able to use these G codes for non-Medicare payers. If your lab performs blood test combinations other than those described by 85025 or 85027, you'll need to know the separate CPT Codes for each test so you can correctly report the service to other payers.

To report any combination of blood count tests other than those described by 85025 (... complete [CBC], automated [Hgb, Hct, RBC, WBC and platelet count] and automated differential WBC count) and 85027 (... complete [CBC], automated [Hgb, Hct, RBC, WBC and platelet count]) to private payers, you should report the individual codes that describe the specific components the lab performed. Use the following table to find the CPT codes representing component tests of CBC, as well as codes for differential WBC count.
