Focus 83020 Testing
Question: Our lab is performing a new test using capillary electrophoresis to evaluate whole blood for hemoglobin fractions. The assay quantifies levels of hemoglobin A, A2, and F. How should we code this test? Codify Subscriber Answer: You should use 83020 (Hemoglobin fractionation and quantitation; electrophoresis [eg, A2, S, C, and/or F]). The hemoglobin fractions listed in the code are examples, so 83020 is the best code for your test even though your lab doesn't evaluate exactly the listed fractions. Also, the code definition states "electrophoresis," but not "capillary electrophoresis," yet 83020 remains the most specific code for the test you describe. Clinicians may order this test in the presence of anemia or family history to aid in diagnosis of a suspected hemoglobin disorders.
