Pathology/Lab Coding Alert

Reader Question:

No Code for Insufficient Volume

Question: We know that for cytopathology specimens, we cannot bill for hemolyzed or inadequate cells. But our pathologists think that we can bill 88305 when endometrial/endocervical curettings show "insufficient volume of tissue for full evaluation of the endometrium or endocervix." Can we report the 88305 service? Massachusetts Subscriber Answer: No, you should not report a service when the test is not performed or completed. When the pathologist performs 88305 (Level IV Surgical pathology, gross and microscopic examination, endocervix, curettings/biopsy or endometrium, curettings/biopsy) or any surgical pathology service, it includes accession, examination and report. If the specimen is inadequate so that the pathologist cannot complete the examination and provide a report that provides diagnostic information to the treating physician, the pathologist should not charge for the service.
