Reader Question:

Sinus Coding

Question: What is the proper CPT code for right and left maxillary sinus contents submitted with a history of chronic sinusitis?

Richard Voet, MD, NDPS
Dallas, Texas

Answer: Based on your description, the contents for both sinuses were submitted as one sample and should be billed as 88304 (polyps, inflammatory-nasal/sinusoidal). This is one of those specimens that is not to be unbundled. To bill for both you must label each specimen separately.
