READER QUESTIONS:

Use New Code for Drug Assay

Question: When a physician orders drug-level monitoring of sirolimus in the blood for transplant patients, how should we report the test?

Iowa Subscriber
Answer: CPT 2006 introduces a new code for the sirolimus drug assay--80195 (Sirolimus). The code describes a fairly new immunoassay used to monitor sirolimus levels in the blood.

Sirolimus is prescribed for patients on immunosuppressive therapy for solid-organ transplants. You can expect the physician to order the test regularly to optimize the dosage for effectiveness and to minimize toxic side effects.
