Pathology/Lab Coding Alert

You Can Get NCCI Edits Free Online

After years of paying to learn about new coding restrictions CMS has placed on your lab, you can finally look at the National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits for free. CMS recently posted the quarterly edits to its Web site, making it easier for you to identify pairs of codes that carriers will flag as unallowable when billed together.

The edits bundle services in two instances: pairs in which one code describes a component of a more comprehensive code, and pairs that describe mutually exclusive procedures.

You can see the NCCI edits at www.cms.hhs.gov/physicians/cciedits/cciedits.asp. The files are in zipped Microsoft Excel format, so users will need the appropriate software to examine them.
