Pediatric Coding Alert

Correction:

Use 90472 for 2nd IM Admin

When administering a second intramuscular (IM) immunization without physician counseling, you should use +90472, not 90471.

The Pediatric Coding Alert 2007 Vol. 10, No. 11 "You Be the Coder: Catch-Up Shot Session" listed the additional IM immunization administration incorrectly as 90471 (... one vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid]). The chart should have instead listed +90472 (Immunization administration [includes percutaneous, intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular injections]; each additional vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid] [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]).
