New Diagnosis Codes for 1999

The Health Care Financing Administration and the National Center for Health Statistics have released the 1999 revisions to the ICD-9-CM. There are 65 new ICD-9 diagnosis codes, 12 codes that have been deleted, and six that have been revised. The following are the changes most likely to apply to pediatrics:

1. Code changes for malaise and fatigue. 780.7 (malaise and fatigue) has been deleted. Now, however, there are two new codes which encompass similar conditions. These are 780.71 (chronic fatigue syndrome) and 780.79 (other malaise and fatigue).

2. Breathing problems. There are several new diagnosis codes for breathing problems. Those that apply to pediatrics are 786.03 (apnea), 786.04 (Cheyne-Stokes respiration), 786.05 (shortness of breath), 786.06 (tachypnea), and 786.07 (wheezing).
