Pediatric Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Casting Material

Question: Can we bill a supply code for casting material in conjunction with global fracture codes?

New Jersey Subscriber

Answer: You may not bill for casting supplies with the initial fracture care codes. All fracture care involving closed treatment, open treatment or percutaneous skeletal fixation includes the application and removal of the first cast or traction device. If, however, you replace a cast that was placed earlier either by yourself or by another physician you can bill for the supply.
