Pediatric Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Home Visits

Question: Our pediatricians are thinking about seeing newborns at one week at the babys home. They want to use 99347-99350 (home visit codes). Is this appropriate?

Oregon Subscriber

Answer: Its perfectly fine to use those codes; however, these are not specifically for preventive-medicine servicesthey are for sick visits. If the diagnosis code is V20.2 (99251-99263), the insurance company may not reimburse the claim. The more common use of the home visit codes by pediatricians is to care for special-needs children, for which insurance companies willingly pay. If there is a problem, such as a feeding problem, diaper rash, or some other problem that would allow the use of one of the home visit codes, you could use that diagnosis code along with the appropriate home visit code.
