Include BMI Calculation in E/M
Question: We have been calculating our patients’ body mass index (BMI) when we perform well visits. How do we bill for the BMI calculation?
However, the added BMIrecommendation starting at age two means you may report an additional ICD-9 code. Use the BMI percentile to choose the correct V85.5x code. For instance, you would represent a 3-year-old girl’s 10 percent BMI with V85.52 (Body Mass Index, pediatric, 5th percentile to less than 85th percentile for age). You would include the examination in the preventive medicine service.

Answer: Calculating BMI is included in the office visit—specifically the physical exam portion of the visit. Although the American Academy of Pediatrics includes a recommendation of BMI screening in its Bright Futures guidelines, that doesn’t mean you’ll collect a separate fee for it.
