Question: How do I code for the congenital absence of the pectoralis major muscle?

Answer: The ICD-9 code for this anomaly is 756.81 (other specified anomalies of muscle, tendon, fascia, and connective tissue; absence of muscle and tendon). The anomaly is typically an isolated syndrome associated with Poland sequence, a unilateral defect of the pectoralis muscle and syndactyly of the hand, webbing of the fingers or toes. There is no ICD-9 code for Poland sequence. Usually, this syndrome is not noticed until the preschool years.
