Reader Question:

Ring Block

Question: Should we use CPT 64450 in addition to the circumcision code if all we do is a ring block? New Jersey Subscriber Answer: Yes. You may use 64450* (Injection, anesthetic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch) in addition to 54150 (Circumcision, using clamp or other device; newborn). You should use 64450 for a dorsal penile nerve block or a ring block.

The code for the nerve block (64450) should be used for a ring block because, in effect, any block in a newborn circumcision affects the dorsal penile nerve.
