Pediatric Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Urinalysis

Question: Most insurance plans are refusing to pay for a urinalysis (CPT 81002 ) along with a well visit, saying it is part of the exam itself. How can we get the urinalysis paid?

Answer: The denial of 81002 is the latest problem facing pediatric practices. There is not a shred of support for this denial. The best solution is to appeal every denial multiple times, including the insurance commissioner and the employees human resources department in your appeals.
