Reader Question:

Weight Checks

Question: How should we code for weight checks?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: If you asked that the parent schedule a visit because of growth concerns, and the nurse weighs the baby and makes a notation in the chart only, bill 99211 with diagnosis code 779.3 (feeding problems in newborn) or 783.3 (feeding difficulties and mismanagement). If the parent simply wants to know how much the baby weighs, you cannot bill. For weight checks done for another reason on an older child the child has been prescribed Ritalin or is being followed for obesity or anorexia nervosa, for example you can bill 99211 with the diagnosis of the primary condition.
