Reader Question:

Wood's Lamp Code Proves Elusive

Question: A mother brings her son in for a suspected corneal abrasion. The pediatrician dips a fluorescein strip into the corner of the child's eye and uses a Wood's lamp to illuminate the eye. Which CPT code should I use for the eye exam? Maine Subscriber Answer: No code exists for putting the dye in the child's eye and using the handheld lamp to examine the cornea. Therefore, you should include the examination and fluorescein in the E/M service (99201-99215, Office or other outpatient visit for the evaluation and management of a new or established patient).
