Pediatric Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Exercise-Induced Asthma

Question: What is the code for exercise-induced asthma?

Urmila Singh, MD, Indianapolis, IN

Answer: Lisa Villella, office manager for Peachtree Pediatrics, a two-pediatrician practice in Peachtree City, GA, says to use the basic asthma code: 493.0. This is for extrinsic asthma: transient narrowing of airway diameters in the bronchial tree, caused by environmental factor. Included is allergic asthma, atopic asthma, and childhood asthma.

Tip: Asthma codes need a fifth digit. The fifth digit 0" is without mention of status asthmaticus, and 1" is with status asthmaticus.
