What about SLP Evaluation Codes?

With all the buzz about stratifying the existing PT and OT evaluation codes, many are left wondering what is happening on the speech scene.
According to Neela Swanson, director of health care coding policy for the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), the new evaluation codes in the proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule rule do not affect speech-language pathology.
SLPs have evaluation CPT® codes outside of the PM&R section (for example, codes 92521-92524, 92526, 96105, 96125).
“Our evaluation codes are single-level, unlike the new PT/OT codes, and as such, have not been subject to the type of concern the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has expressed about the new codes,” Swanson says. “The only code used primarily by SLPs (and psychologists) in the current PM&R section is 97532 (cognitive skills development), and ASHA is currently leading the effort to update this particular code.”
