NEWS BRIEFS:

Kansas Scores as State No. 44 for Direct Access

Alexandria, Va.--If you're a physical therapist in Kansas, gear up for more patients knocking on your door.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius recently signed into law House Bill 2483, as part of Senate Bill 11, to allow Kansas residents access to physical therapist services without a physician referral in certain circumstances, according to a May 11 American Physical Therapy Association press release.

Under the new law, patients can also receive instruction and information from physical therapists regarding workplace injury prevention and healthy living without a physician referral, APTA said.

Details: Under the legislation, patients are allowed 30 days of treatment from physical therapists without physician referrals if the patient has been referred to a PT for that condition within the previous year.

This makes Kansas the 44th state, plus the District of Columbia, to enact a direct access law.
