F-Wave Study

Question: How should we code an F-wave study without other motor nerve conduction testing?

Answer: The physician will always perform a motor nerve conduction study with the F-wave study, so you should code 95903 (Nerve conduction, amplitude and latency/velocity study, each nerve; motor, with F-wave study) only once per nerve tested. Unlike an H-wave study (which is more complex), F-wave measurement does not involve reapplication of electrodes. Therefore, it requires minimal additional work when done with a motor nerve conduction velocity study. Note that CMS considers the F-wave study part of the motor nerve conduction study and will not reimburse separately for it.
