Podiatry Coding & Billing Alert

Reader Question:

Distinguish Between 28120 Versus 28122

Question: The podiatrist removed an infected portion of the patient’s tarsal bone using saucerization. He did not remove any part of the talus or calcaneus. Which CPT® code should we report for this procedure?

Answer: You should report 28122 (Partial excision (craterization, saucerization, sequestrectomy, or diaphysectomy) bone (eg, osteomyelitis or bossing); tarsal or metatarsal bone, except talus or calcaneus) for this procedure.

Don’t miss: If the podiatrist had instead performed a partial excision of the talus or calcaneus, then you should report 28120 (Partial excision (craterization, saucerization, sequestrectomy, or diaphysectomy) bone (eg, osteomyelitis or bossing); talus or calcaneus).
