Reader Question:

Know Whether Pathological Fracture is Due to Osteoporosis or Not

Question: What do the ICD-10 Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting say about reporting codes from category M81-?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: The guidelines instruct you to only report the codes from category M81- (Osteoporosis without current pathological fracture) for patients who do not currently have a pathological fracture due to their osteoporosis. This is true, even if the patient has had a fracture in the past.

Caution: You should never confuse the codes from categories M80.0- (Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture) and M80.8- (Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture) with codes from category M81-.

Don’t miss: If the patient has a history of osteoporosis fractures, you should report Z87.310 (Personal history of (healed) osteoporosis fracture) after the appropriate code from category M81-.

If applicable, you should also report an additional code from category M89.7- (Major osseous defect), according to ICD-10.
