Reader Question:

Podiatrist Performs Osteotomy of Second Metatarsal? Do This

Question: The podiatrist performed an osteotomy of the second metatarsal. He needed to lengthen the bone, so he transected it and pulled the two pieces apart to allow osseous regrowth to fill in the gap. He controlled the bleeding and closed the incision in layers. Which CPT® code should I report for this procedure?

Answer: You should report 28308 (Osteotomy, with or without lengthening, shortening or angular correction, metatarsal; other than first metatarsal, each) for this procedure.

You should report 28308 for each separate osteotomy on a metatarsal other than the first that the provider performs. If the podiatrist performs multiple osteotomies in a single procedure, then you should report 28309 (Osteotomy, with or without lengthening, shortening or angular correction, metatarsal; multiple, (eg, Swanson type cavus foot procedure)).

Don’t miss: When the podiatrist performs multiple osteotomies, you should send in the op report with specific notes and description of each osteotomy.
