Conquer Ingrown Nail Coding With Ease

Question: The patient had an ingrown toenail. After my podiatrist prepped the patient and after local anesthesia, he excised the nail and nail matrix of the patient’s great left toe with a scalpel. To prevent a new nail from forming, my podiatrist used phenol to permanently remove the nail matrix. What CPT® code should I report for this procedure?

Maine Subscriber

Answer: You should report 11750 (Excision of nail and nail matrix, partial or complete (eg, ingrown or deformed nail), for permanent removal).

Don’t miss: The nail plate is the nail or the hard, translucent plate. The nail matrix is the nail plate’s proximal end that underlies the proximal nail fold. Nail growth starts at the matrix.
