Medicare also has modifiers for when you aren’t obligated to provide an ABN.

When your physician provides a service to a Medicare patient that the payer might not cover, your practice will need to:

1. Get a signed advance beneficiary notice (ABN) on file, if necessary, and

2. Append the proper modifier based on the encounter notes.
