HIPAA Update

Billers are learning the ropes of the HIPAA transactions rule -- slowly but surely.

According to the most recent data from CMS, the industry-wide effort to get claims in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is still making forward progress. The latest stats show that 65.06 percent of Medicare electronic claims received Feb. 2-6 were received in proper HIPAA format. That's up considerably from 51.77 percent the week of Dec. 8, just two months ago.

Lesson learned: The grace period established by CMS will not run indefinitely, so providers need to step up efforts to get claims in line with the HIPAA transactions rule.
